Leadership

Leadership & Management

I believe that anyone can be a leader. Leadership entails setting a vision, aligning a team around that vision, creating processes to implement that vision and executing on it. It’s rare that one person can excel at all of those things so the best leaders find people around them that are strong in ones that they aren’t to build an outstanding team.

Empathy is key to my management and leadership style. I prioritize transparency and honesty to build trust and a sense of belonging. As a leader I feel strongest when listening and advocating for my team. I also prioritize setting clear expectations and an aligned focus on what we’re solving and why.

Seeing my team grow and succeed has been one of my most enriching experiences and is one I’m excited to keep focusing on throughout my career.

Processes for leading a UX team

To set my teams up for success, these are some of the processes I use.

  • Structured design reviews

  • Roadmapping and project sizing at the being of each quarter

  • Monthly career discussions with my direct reports

  • Mid-year self-evaluations

  • Org design

  • Internal “release reviews” to hit a high quality bar before launching

Leading beyond UX: Women’s ERG Lead and Women’s Summit Co-lead

As a lead for the Women’s ERG for 2 years, I helped define the mission, values, and leadership structure. I was also the events lead, planning events that fit with our ERG’s mission, themes, and interests.

I was selected to be a Women’s Summit Co-lead to create a day-long in-person event for 250 women that focused on the themes of intersectionality and choice. The day included keynote speakers, fireside chats, breakout sessions and social time supporting both physical and mental health.

It’s important to me to be a part of fostering community, diversity and inclusion within both my team and the larger organization and the events I led for the Women’s ERG where we got to have tough but important conversations were both incredibly fulfilling and also made me eager to continue pushing for improvement in company cultures.
